Océ First to Deliver Full Internet Connectivity For Large Format Document Printing and Management Systems New Océ TDS Series Fits All Print Volume Needs and Expands Technical Document Management Beyond the LAN to Any Location Worldwide

April 17, 2001 CHICAGO, IL -- Recognizing the demand for global connectivity, Océ (NASDAQ: OCENY), today introduced a product line which allows companies that design, build or manufacture to print and scan large-format engineering drawings and technical specifications to any location worldwide using the Internet. The Océ Technical Document Systems (TDS) Series, with three systems addressing departmental through high-volume print needs, adds a variety of functionality and print-quality enhancements to the company’s industry leading large-format printer line. Océ, a global leader in digital document management and delivery technology, first revolutionized the large-format market nearly six years ago by helping analog customers migrate to productivity-enhancing digital capabilities.

Océ is focused on this marketplace like nobody else, said Joyce Virnich, vice president of marketing for the Océ Wide Format Printing Systems business unit. “The Océ TDS Series allows our customers to save time and communicate their ideas from their desktops over the Web. The Océ TDS Series is another example of how we continue to combine our industry knowledge with the latest technologies to help companies achieve huge productivity gains.” Océ recognizes the importance of fast document availability and communication in the technical document market. Effective control of technical document flow, including locations worldwide, allows better and faster product innovation and improved time-to-market, ultimately increasing Océ’s customers’ competitive advantage. The concept of the Océ TDS Series blends a number of patented Océ technologies to create a consistent range of products providing digital copying, printing, scanning and distribution of wide-format black and white technical documents. The series – including the Océ TDS400, Océ TDS600 and Océ TDS800 systems – provides a level of uniformity in applications and interfaces that has not been available until now.

Uniform Applications and Interface

Giving users fast, easy-to-use and productive systems across every print volume is the new Océ Power Logic® Controller. Residing at the core of the Océ TDS Series, the Océ Power Logic Controller allows users to print, copy and scan concurrently because it spools and stores jobs independently. Moreover, users can create complex sets and manage the entire process through a series of uniform user applications offered by the Océ Power Logic Controller. The easy-to-use interface generated by the Océ Power Logic Controller provides a consistent look and feel across the entire Océ TDS line. It allows organizations with multiple Océ TDS printers to save time and eliminate many costs typically associated with training and daily equipment operation. The controller employs the latest in Microsoft® Windows NT™ technologies. With Océ Remote Logic® software, users can manage print queues and all system functionality remotely from any location. Océ Remote Logic software enables users to view the status for each job, cancel, hold/restart the whole job and customize system settings. Additionally, users can scan to file from the scanner panel or scan directly to any destination with Océ Scan Logic® software. Incorporated in the scanning and printing software is Océ Image Logic™ image-enhancement technology. Océ Image Logic software is a patented digital-enhancement process that analyzes an original’s image, millimeter by millimeter, to refine and optimize it while suppressing background imperfections. Every Océ TDS system becomes a virtual Web site that can be controlled and addressed from anywhere in the world,” said Virnich. “Scanning and printing through the Web come to life with Océ Scan Logic, Océ Remote Logic and Océ document submission software.”

Print and Scan to PDF

Because Adobe PostScript 3 and Adobe PDF formats continue to emerge as increasingly important and effective standards for the engineering reprographics market, the Océ TDS Series allows users not only to directly print PDF files, but scan-to-PDF format as well. These unique capabilities are a result of an international business partnership recently initiated between Océ and Adobe Systems Inc. “Together, Océ and Adobe are spearheading the use of PDF in the technical document market, providing a format that is both secure and ideally suited for document transfer over the Web,” said Mal Baboyian, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Océ-USA, Inc. “Merging PostScript and PDF with Océ’s TDS Series provides large-format users with the same benefits of what has already become known as a universal standard for document transfer.”

On-demand, Departmental Printing Needs

Available now, the Océ TDS400 system for on-demand, departmental users is the first 600 dpi printer in its class and sets a new benchmark in print quality. The Océ TDS400 system provides excellent detail and sharper fine line resolution, provides copying, printing and scan-to-file functionality and improves on the quality, productivity and versatility of its predecessor, the Océ 9400-II.

Mid-Volume Printing Needs

Available in May, the Océ TDS600 system allows larger workgroups and midsize central reprographic departments to customize and configure a system with up to 16 on-line media selections. The Océ TDS600 can also be configured without a printer and supports stand-alone scanning to convert legacy hard-copy drawings within the archive environment. The Océ TDS600 system is based on the Océ 9600 and offers enhanced 400 dpi print resolution for improved print quality and Océ Image Logic technology to maximize copy and scan quality. Other features include advanced spooling and queue management and concurrent printing, scanning, copying and finishing.

High-Volume Printing Needs

At 42 feet per minute, the Océ TDS800 is the fastest wide-format system on the market, providing digital copying, printing, scan-to-file and finishing. It is also the first truly Web-enabled device for central environments, allowing job submission and scanning to any location worldwide, using the Internet. The new TDS800 provides 40 percent higher overall productivity than its predecessor, the Océ 9800, reflecting a 25% faster machine speed combined with print-and-scan concurrency. In addition the Océ TDS800 offers six media rolls, an enhanced photo mode, and over 500 improvements in internal parts and imaging processes. Customer shipments of the Océ TDS800 will begin in June.

Workgroup Collaboration

Océ has more than 75 years of experience in the wide-format market, and has developed product by anticipating and responding to the needs of its customers. The Océ TDS Series integrates with existing Océ software, including Océ Repro Desk, which lets reprographers accept and process remotely submitted jobs, and Océ Engineering Exec® software for print management, archiving, and distribution in engineering and manufacturing environments. Océ Engineering Exec software uses Internet access to facilitate Web collaboration, enabling users to browse folders, view documents and submit print jobs from anywhere to any printer connected to Océ Engineering Exec software. Among the markets that will benefit from the Océ TDS product line will be manufacturing, utilities, government, telecommunications, architecture, construction, and reprographic service bureaus, which depend heavily on engineering and design documents.

Then, printing takes place automatically, producing results that are right first time and ready to deliver.

No time-consuming set-up procedures

Job preparation and checking by the user means there's no need for time-consuming set-up procedures and trial prints by your staff. Or for constant calls to check queries, or, even worse, rejected print runs. Every job is handled automatically, and printed exactly the way the user wants it.

High-speed print server for high throughput

The Océ Repro Desk print server processes incoming jobs at high speed, reducing waiting time to a minimum and ensuring throughput of most print files at virtually full print-engine speed. Queuing and job priorities are handled automatically, and Repro Desk's built-in accounting functions support and simplify your billing process.

Productive, error-free job printing

With all these benefits for both you and your users, Océ Repro Desk is today's solution for productive, error-free printing. It will increase your efficiency and profitability, and give your users the results they expect, every time.

Océ Repro Desk offers a combination of performance and functionality that maximises your productivity with the Océ 9700 and Océ 9800.

Automatic management of incoming jobs

Océ Repro Desk's powerful queuing function automatically manages incoming jobs and sends them to the printer. Priorities can also be assigned manually, for example to insert an urgent job.

Scanning

Repro Desk Scan is an option that fully exploits the scanning power and quality of the Océ 9700 and 9800 systems. File name and location, data format and scan resolution can be selected in the scan window. Scanning takes place at virtually full scanner speed, and the image is displayed in real time. Documents can be copied and scanned simultaneously, allowing you to build your document archive while reproducing hard-copy drawings.

Accounting

Information about print and scan jobs is logged for billing purposes. This information can be exported to any spreadsheet, database or billing application.

With Repro Desk Remote software, your users prepare and check print files at their own site and transmit them directly to your print queue with a single mouse click.

Built-in quality control

Users preview their print files and make sure that all settings are correct before they transmit them to the printer. This means that quality is guaranteed by the user, and does not need to be checked.

Full pen set management

Users can create, edit and view an unlimited number of pen sets with different weights, shades, patterns, shapes and effects, and instantly preview the results on-screen.

Electronic stamping

This function makes it easy to mark and identify prints. Any desired information - for example time, date, project number or custom graphics - can be applied anywhere on the print, at any size and using any Windows font.

Trial printing on any A3 or A4 Windows printer

As a final check before the job is sent to the printer, users can use their own Windows printers to make trial prints. Then they know exactly what they will get before transmitting a job, virtually eliminating the chance of errors.

Job submission

Once the job has been completely defined, it can be sent to the printer by modem, network or disk. The software allows users to enter order, job and delivery information, so the printer can easily process the job.

Falcon

Comprehensive and Easy to Use. The Document Manager provides easy access to all file management operations and each document's database record. The Document Manager is application independent and capable of managing documents for any Windows-based office automation or cad application.

Robust Searching & Indexing Tools

The Document Manager provides an SQL search tool able to sort on any single or combination of database record fields. Additionally, the Database Search command supports the standard SQL comparison operators for date and number fields. For administrators, the Document Manager provides a Mass Update function that permits you edit database records for multiple documents from a search result.

Unlimited Keyword Searching

The Document Manager provides keywords to further facilitate database searching. A 'keyword' is a database attribute that the administrator can define and control as tightly as he chooses. Falcon/DMS offers two general types of keyword categories: system and file format. System keywords (below) can be defined for up to six categories while file format keywords can be defined for up to twenty categories for each file format; individual keywords are then assigned to these keyword categories. For example, you could define twenty keyword categories for your cad file formats, fifteen for your word-processing file format, twelve for your spreadsheet file format, etc.

ODMA and MAPI Compliant

ODMA, or Open Document Management API, is a programming specification that facilitates interaction between ODMA compliant applications and Document Management Systems (DMS). Its primary function is to allow the DMS to intercept all activity that refers to the opening, checking out, saving, etc. of files—this version of Falcon/DMS intercepts the ‘Open’ and ‘Save As’ commands. The Falcon/DMS implementation of ODMA does not simply redirect the application’s ‘Open’ and ‘Save As’ commands to the Document Manager. Rather, you are given the choice to use Falcon/DMS or to use the current application to perform these operations. MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) is a set of functions that permits mail-enabled and mail-aware applications to create mail messages. The Falcon/DMS implementation of MAPI permits users to e-mail copies of documents through MAPI compliant e-mail systems, directly from the Windows Document Manager.

Multiple Environments

Multiple Environments allow different groups or departments (or for that matter, individuals) to work with configurations specific to their unique requirements. An environment can be configured to read global definitions for certain controls and specify unique definitions for others.

Revision Control

Revision Control is designed to track revisions in one of two modes - a History mode and an As-Built/Work in Progress mode. In the History mode, the working document 'inherits' the original filename. In the As-Built mode, the working document's filename will be an incremented version of the original filename. In this scheme, the current revision (the document with the highest increment) is the working document. Revision Control schemes can vary between file formats, and can be configured to create a new revision at file checkout or file checkin, either automatically or at the user's discretion.

Document Notes

Document Notes provides a way for users to itemize activity and communicate specific information for any document. These notes become part of each document's database record.

File Association

File Association is an application-independent file grouping function used to define a relationship between an unlimited number of ‘child’ files and a single ‘parent’ document. Associations to a ‘parent’ document are listed when you open a document for which associations have been defined. File Association allows you to choose which files are to be delivered to the local workstation for modification and which are to be checked out for modification and which are to be copied out for view. An especially powerful feature of File Association is the ability to automatically create database records and associations for documents created on the local hard disk during a design or work session.

Intelligent Data Link (IDL), A Bi-directional Database Linkage (MicroStation) IDL, or Intelligent Data Link

Is an MDL-based database feature designed to automatically define the contents of a design file's title block. Integrated with the Create Design File command, IDL uses information entered in the General Info, Directory & Keywords, and Title Block 'tabs' found on both the Create Design File dialog box and the Document Manager. Using MicroStation's text node technology, the IDL template file maps database fields to predefined text nodes in the linked seed file. IDL is bi-directional: The text displayed on targeted text nodes in a MicroStation design file can be modified from the document's database record, or the database record can be modified by editing the text nodes with MicroStation's Edit Text command.
